What is ALL?

The Adult Literacy and Lifeskills Survey (ALL) is a large-scale, comparative survey that seeks to profile the skills of adults in multiple countries through direct assessment in households.

The skills to be measured directly are:

Prose Literacy:
the knowledge and skills needed to understand and use information from texts such as editorials, news stories, poems, and fiction;

Numeracy:
the knowledge and skills required to effectively manage the mathematical demands of diverse situations;

The ALL study also seeks to profile the skills of adults in two additional domains using indirect behavioral methods.

Skills to be measured indirectly are:

Teamwork: the competencies needed for effective participation in a team, including interpersonal communication skills, adaptability, flexibility, mutual trust, and willingness to work with others;

Information Communication Technology: the knowledge and skills to use information technology to accomplish job-related tasks; and

ALL also profiles participation in episodes of adult education and training, i.e. formal learning after the initial cycle of formal education has been completed.
